As I waited for the bus this morning, the temperature was a frigid 38 degrees and I wondered where summer went. Sure, I've been busy lately, preparing for holiday craft fairs, decorating our house for Halloween and thinking of Christmas card designs. But this time of year always takes me by surprise. I undoubtedly scramble through the closet in search of a hat or gloves, completely confused as to how they disappeared in a few short months. I also realized that I need a new coat because I donated my old one last year. Luckily, I had some coupons for the Limited and found this beauty. I hope it arrives soon!
My second community garden plot is doing incredibly well. It was planted about six weeks ago and has already produced many delicious salads! I did a more well-designed square foot gardening plan in this one and it has definitely paid off. The bed is 8' by 4' and has eight different veggies growing in it. I added extra bags of organic fertilizer and peat moss to improve the soil texture and that has worked very well.
The first community garden plot has been an exercise in futility. There has been a large amount of theft as there is no fence around the garden. The area is filled with bindweed and I was unaware of this when I built my bed. Sadly, it has choked many of my plants and bindweed is nearly impossible to remove without resorting to chemical methods. I am hoping to at least harvest my sweet potatoes this weekend and make pie. Yum! Then it will be time to close up that plot and focus on the other. I am building a hoop house for the raised bed and that should allow me to continue growing lettuce, spinach, and brassicas for a few extra weeks. It will be disassembled and put back up in March to nurse baby plants in the spring.
Before I think too far ahead, I need to focus on production for my upcoming holiday craft fairs. I have been building inventory of 100% soy candles in reusable aluminum tins. So much to do, so little time!
