The Birth of a Letterpress Card

I recently had the opportunity to take a four day intensive letterpress course at Columbia College.  I am hopelessly in love...with a Vandercook printing machine.

At first, it seemed like printing would be a breeze.  I would add beautiful type to my little tray and have stacks of prints in no time.  It didn't quite work out that way.  Each letter of every word must be placed individually and then you hope it lines up.  The design  is tightly placed in the flat tray of the press and inked.  Running rollers over loose type doesn't work, trust me.  Oops.  Part of the appeal of letterpress is its imperfection due to the age of type.   It is frustrating when you discover that one of your letters doesn't show up at all.  That's where some clear tape is handy.

My final project was a collection of 4bar notecards.  I found a beautiful old wooden owl and used it as my inspiration.  I added the words "Owl miss you!" and worked with the spacing until it was perfect.  A touch of rich turquoise ink was the final touch.  After class, I headed to Paper Source to see if I could find a suitable envelope.  Lo and behold, they had just introduced a new Peacock color and it matched my cards perfectly!

Find them in my Etsy shop for $4 each.
